Know Your Why (and everything else gets easier)
Did you make any New Year resolutions for 2016?
Maybe it was to get fit, eat more healthily or even stop smoking (and go you if that was one of them).
How’s it going as we move into February?
Chances are high that you’re one of the 92% of people who end up letting their New Year resolutions go. Yep, just 8% make a promise to themselves on January 1st and keep it.
Know why so many determined people fail?
Because they have no Why.
The fundamental part of goal setting that most people forget about when they make New Year resolutions is their Why.
Why do you want to get fit? So you can enjoy more active time with your kids? So you don’t get tired every time you walk up a flight of stairs? Because you want to reduce your risk of a chronic disease that runs in your family?
So why are you not getting fit then?
Why do you want to eat more healthily? Because you’re starting to put on weight? Because you’re already overweight and worrying about your health? Because you have bad skin? Because you have no energy?
So why are you not eating more healthily then?
Getting clear on your Why and then reminding yourself of Why you want to make changes will help keep you motivated when the going gets tough. Because it will get tough. But it’s all about commitment. And knowing Why makes it easier to recommit when you’re in danger of giving in.
If you get clear about your Why then the next time you can’t be bothered to go to the gym (that you’re paying for and not using) you’ll remind yourself how good it will feel when you actively play with your children (or grandchildren), or how proud you’ll feel when you can run a mile, or how wonderful it will be when you live to a healthy, ripe old age! :-)
And the next time you’re tempted to make unhealthy food choices you’ll think about how much better you’ll feel about yourself when you lose those extra pounds, how good your skin will look if you get that sugar craving under control, or how amazing it will feel when you can fit into your favourite jeans again.
Today, whatever else is going on, you have the power within you to do just one small thing that brings you closer to your goals, whether it’s going for a walk, doing a 10 minute workout at home, eating an apple instead of a biscuit or putting those cigarettes away and doing something to distract yourself till the craving passes.
