vtv's nutritionist surinder phull at the bbc's horsemeat banquet
This week the VTV Nutritionist, Surinder Phull, appeared as an expert on the BBC in a programme called Horsemeat Banquet. The programme took a look at what's really in our food and why we don't feel comfortable eating horse, offal, bugs and more.
Would it bother you if you bought a dish advertised as lamb that didn't contain any lamb? What if you found out it apparently didn't contain any beef, pork, goat, horse or chicken either? (It came as some relief to the BBC panel that it also tested negatively for human!) But what actually is in it?! The test results are not back yet...
Since our blog about the reasons for the horsemeat scandal, the situation has got ever more complicated and far reaching. It seems there's still a long way to go until we finish uncovering what's really in our food supply and the level of corruption that has enabled the trading of horse as beef or chicken as beef or offal as muscle meat. (Nothing wrong with offal - if you decide to eat meat, it's a nutritious option, but it should be labelled as such).
If nothing else the BBC's Horsemeat Banquet served to remind us that, if we do eat meat, we should eat the best quality we can get and from a trusted source. That we need to look at our relationship with meat and perhaps eat less of it and eat every part of the animal?
Our disconnection from food in general is probably magnified in our disconnection from meat and meat production. It's time to focus on some difficult questions.
